Freakin' Weekend Aloft

It's Memorial Day Weekend. And for Anderson, SC, that means Freedom Weekend Aloft. Every year for the past 6, Anderson has hosted the festival of the balloons. There is music, food, rides, games, and multiple balloon launches all weekend long. I walked outside last night around 6:30pm to the sight of about 70 hot air balloons looming over my house... very close.

On Friday night, the concert (a good 2 miles away from my house), shook the walls until midnight. (that Marshall Tucker band goes on forever). Fortunately, the balloons are much quieter.

Some Friday linkage

Meg sent me this. It's called "The Circular Life," and it's very interesting. And so is this street painting site.

On a totally different note, I just saw Episode III this afternoon. I know, I know, for a die-hard Star Wars fan, a week's a long time to wait. Well, my 5th Anniversary was last week (pictures here), I've been busy with Home Group, Lost group, and spending time with family. In reality, you have to have priorities, people. It's just a movie (an enjoyable one, but still...). My thoughts, best of of the most recent three. The acting rivaled wooden cutouts of the characters. There were several "oh, c'mon" scenes where the cliches abounded. But it's still Star Wars, and I had a good time. It concluded the series nicely, and for the book-reading-geeks (I'm not saying it's me or anything, but A.C. Crispen's Han Solo Trilogies are enjoyable), it gave some mental images to suppert the novels.

Go see it so you'll be like the other 4.5 trillion of us. You'll at least say, "hey, I think I know that robot-guy."

humbling

This is worth a look; a reality check. Enter in your salary, and it calculates where you rank on a global scale. It's eye opening if you live in America.

This reminds me of what my brother, Jason, spoke on at New Spring this past week. Download the mp3 here.

It's official, www.perrynoble.com is on the web.

Here it is, people. My pastor, Perry Noble, has now found himself a voice on the web. PerryNoble.com officially launches today, and should be a good read. I designed the page for him last week. I think you'll enjoy his ramblings, and it will give you an interesting insight into the passion and leadership that drives New Spring, our church. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Finale night, and ASCII Generator.

Tonight was the season finales of both Lost and Alias. Despite cliffhangers on both; a good time was had by all. We hosted wing night amongst friends. The wings were a'plenty, Julie prepared a wonderful dessert, and the entire finale celebration took place outside.

The evening started with my iPod patched through my Altec Lansings, and a custom mix I pulled together for the evening. Selections included George Clinton and Parliment, Hexstatic, Layo and Bushwacka, Coldplay, Faith No More (always a classic), The Chemical Bros., and Digable Planets (tugging on the familiar).

Now for the setup: when you're the AV Club, you have connections... we ran cable TV and power into my backyard and set up an outdoor theater (speakers, subwoofer, multiple TVs, the works).

Setup only took about 30 minutes, and everything worked the first time. (amazing)

The result:

Right here, no one's looking. Still, you can see the TVs and tiki torches.

My son lifting a cell phone from Jared. I don't know if I approve of this new thievery hobby he's picked up.

Last shot, of the TV... It's Charlie! (I tried to get a great shot of the Lost opener... it would have been the perfect setup for this post, but by the time my camera was up, all I saw was "OS"... too late).

The whole endeavor was great fun, and I don't think I ticked off my neighbors too terribly much. To be on the safe side, I did warn them beforehand, and asked that if we were too loud, to please come tell us. Luckily, they're all Lost fans, and completely understood.

(RANDOM LINK)
And just for fun... file this under "some more retro fun". I remember these back in the day, and it took much, much longer to do then.

You don't know how deep it goes...

I'm going to give you a little insight into the mind of Ken. The contents of this post were initiated by a conversation with Matt and Sara on Sunday night.

There are some items of clothing that can be worn more than once. Seriously, think about this. Shirts worn for just the evening? Worthy of another wear. Socks, in certain cases, can be doubled up. Jeans are the ultimate.

You can wear jeans many, many days without visible signs of multi-wear. Sometimes, it even takes a day or two to get jeans broken after washing.

Here's the quandary. The clothes have been worn. Clearly, one cannot just place them back in the closet, amongst all the other clean clothes. No, they have been soiled and tainted. They will contaminate the other clothing. But you can't put them in the hamper, either (assuming you own a hamper, or a hamper-like place). They'll get prematurely washed. Not good. You're just getting the jeans broken in.

So, if the closet is clothing heaven, and the hamper is clothing hell, then the "middle state" where my jeans often reside during the nighttime hours...

... is clothing purgatory.

I have utilized the concept of clothing purgatory for many years. It has taken many forms. In high school, it was a stool that say in front of my wall-sized Led Zeppelin poster. It held as many as 20 items at a time. In college, there were designated areas (just ask my former roommate). Now at home, there is a cozy little corner between my side of the bed and the wall. Purgatory.

In talking through this, Meg began to realize that since our marriage, and 4 houses later, I have always (unbeknownst to her) engineered our sleeping arrangements to allow for a bedside clothing purgatory. (It was an "ah-ha" moment for her).

Am I the only one? Are there others with a clothing purgatory? Perhaps you have one and just didn't know what to call it until now. Do tell.

The Celebration (a history in pictures)

So, 5th anniversary. Celebration 2005. It all begins at the Reedy River Park in Greenville, SC. They recently renovated the entire thing. Take a look at the falls and beautiful (in an Indiana Jones way) suspension bridge. Yeah, it sways. We brought a picnic, and began the evening here.

The Dinner

Meg enjoys the deliciously prepared French-inspired picnic, complete with Huit cookies, direct from France (my Dad returned from overseas yesterday and brought us goodies).

UPDATE: in the picnic basket, the bottle contains non-alcoholic sparking grape juice. Wouldn't want to start a scandal or anything.

A brief stop at our favorite Greenville coffee shop, Coffee Underground. Fine java, the only decent french press in the upstate (aside from my house), and a tiramisu that'll make you cry. Oh, and they show independent films like Ghost Dog, starring Forest Whitaker.

MAKE Blog

MAKE: Blog has some interesting thing you can build, on your own, for fun. Wanna build your own R2D2. They'll show you how. I've been considering subscribing to the magazine. Has anyone read it? Is it worth a read?

In other news, tomorrow is my 5th Wedding Anniversary. Meg's site has many more details, and even the rogue picture or two of us on that bless'd day. Stroll by and enjoy. We're recreating a smattering of our dates from the past tomorrow... it should be fun. A camera will be involved, and so I'll have photos for you all to enjoy soon enough.

In geek news, one of my Production Team members so kindly came up to the office for a few hours to teach me the finer points of Illustrator. I'm still two versions behind (using v.10), because I haven't mastered enough of it to bother upgrading. I'm feeling much more confident on it now, however. I feel a new desktop in the works.

Have a great weekend!

5.12.2005

just like Oprah

I'm sitting here at my desk, held mercilessly captive until my render is complete. Oh, I could go somewhere, but then what if there's a crash? This is one of my most un-favorite things to do. Ever. One day, maybe renderings will be a thing of the past. Maybe I can build a render farm. No matter. Rendering sucks, no two ways about it. I just want a 25 second shot. Why does it take After Effects 52 minutes to give it to me?

So, in the middle of one of my least favorite things, I've decided to compile a list of my MOST favorite things. These are just little "plug-ins" to my life that have enhanced it somehow. First, is my Moleskine notebook. I've become so much more productive with idea generation since I've started carrying this little guy with me, especially to the gym. Can't break it, it's hard drive can't crash. Next, is Psunami. It's the reason my render is taking so long, but geez, the results are worth it. My 12" laptop on my list. I am able to be so much more productive when I have this little guy on me. Need info? It's there. Idea you want to run through Photoshop? It's there. It weighs 4.4 lbs., it's wireless, it's NOT a powerhouse. But it's always there.

To compliment the laptop, there's RadTech's screen cloth. I hate a dirty screen. Almost as much as I hate country music. This fixes problem #1. Next is my iPod mini. My godly wife gave me one for my birthday, and it's become an invaluble tool in getting me to jog more often. And listen to sermons / podcasts. View my inner geek.

There's just a little insight. Nothing deep, but it burned 5 minutes. Now for that other 47 left before the render's done...

Only ten days left...

Look out everyone, from the makers of the Meatrix, it's Store Wars. No, wait, that's not Episode III. Oh well. Anyway, it's been an awesome weekend in New Spring land. We just kicked off iTunes: the series. (the colon part was added by me). What's not to love about a live iTunes playbar that shows what song the praise band is currently playing, and a 20' iPod onstage (complete with pixel graphics). Ah, times are good, people.

In other news, I've had the chance recently to watch a handful of movies I've been wanting to squander my time on. I saw the Incredibles yesterday. (not bad, beautiful renderings, good camera moves); Ocean's 12 (strangely, I enjoyed it as much as the first... weird for a sequel); White Chicks (uh, it had its moments... or its moment. Yeah). I think there was another in there, but I can't recall it. Anyway, I do love a good movie.

Completion (sort of)

Shy of the counter rendering (only 2 more hours!), I am done with the visuals from the iTunes series at New Spring.

Samples of the on-screen graphics can been seen here, here, and here.

The opener.
First... imagine this will be displayed on the "screen" of a 20 foot iPod that will occupy the center of the stage. With the web-version, you miss out on the lo-res pixelization I built into it. Still, you can get a general feel from the clip. The audio track is "Response" by the Chemical Bros. Music: Response. It suits the iTunes series well as we are covering popular tracks; searching them for deeper meaning.

Diversion.

It's been a busy week, immersed in the land of pixels. I have 3 of 12 things left to complete for New Spring's new series, iTunes. In the process of developing slides / graphics for the series, I built a new AV Club desktop.

Desktop 06a (1024x768, jpg).

In other (brief) news... Stash 08 arrived yesterday. (note to self, watch and drool). Also, I have the Warp compilation playing in the background... (here, or review here). I'm inspired (and a little scared).

Now, back to the pixels.
